I am a sculptor who creates objects that are both unfamiliar and familiar. For example, I might find a second hand crystal dolphin, break it up, cold cut it, form and finish it and transform the glass into an object that evokes a memory of the sea. Twenty years ago right before I died on an operation table I was in an absolute panic. As death closed in on me I closed my eyes and I suddenly saw a bright orb floating in black space. The light and color emitted from the orb were so visually crisp and compelling that the image released enough endorphins inside me that the vision shifted something within me.
From the memory of a sculpture the experience went from fear and loathing into complete euphoria. The greatest peace I have ever known. Essentially a vision brought me back to life.
An orb turned death into life? And how did it have enough intrinsic power to trigger that epiphany? And that is what I am looking for in my art.
